Hit songwriter Samuel “Sam Hook” Jean was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Elmont “Exit 13” Long Island. As the son of Haitian natives, Frantz and Nicole, Sam grew up with a first-hand view of what it meant to pave your own way and keep it in the family. Sam’s father, a pastor, and entrepreneur has owned various companies in Brooklyn, NY. As a young child, Sam admired the fact that his father never had to work for anyone but God and himself. This fact would become the foundation of Sam’s motivation throughout his life and career.
By the end of his junior year in high school, Sam left home to embark on his first music venture. He joined “Natural Born Hustlers” or NBH, a music label founded by the nephews of Jay-Z, as well as a small group of childhood friends, in South Orange, NJ. Sam was introduced to them by a friend and family member Carlos “Los” Desrosiers. Sam had a naturally zealous attitude towards music and business. His talent was once noticed by Hip Hop Legend and mogul, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter in a meeting where the youngsters got the opportunity to perform for Jay-Z at his Manhattan home. “He is special, tell him to stay on it.” said Jay-Z to the manager of NBH. At the end of the meeting Jay made it clear that there were no handouts or favors and said “Let your name reach mine and I’ll throw you a bone.”
After graduating high school, he began a party promotion company with a band of childhood friends, called the Sam Hook Movement. They were able to throw parties in various boroughs of NY and also, ATL and London. At the age of 19, Sam moved to Atlanta where he obtained his first songwriting placement on J. Holidays sophomore album, Round 2. This led to his first management deal with Compound Entertainment, a company founded by the legendary singer/ songwriter Ne-Yo. In 2009, Sam relocated to L.A., where he began to work with various artists such as Keri Hilson, The Game, Chris Brown and more. Writing the hook for hit single “Pot of Gold” by rapper The Game, led to then Chairman of Interscope Records, Jimmy Iovine, immediately setting a release date for the highly anticipated R.E.D. album, in 2011. The album climbed to #1 in its first week, becoming Sam’s first #1 album credit. This created a new momentum for Sam and his writing career in Los Angeles.
Throughout the years Sam has achieved new levels of success with some of these most notable accomplishments. In 2012, Sam wrote on the hit “Celebration” which featured artists The Game and Chris Brown and multiple other artists. In 2013, Sam was given the opportunity to take his talents to another arena, where he worked on the Nike commercial song “My Shoes” with NBA superstar LeBron James and Grammy award-winning vocalist, John legend. In the same year, Sam wrote two songs on Miley Cyrus’s album Bangerz which sold over 3 million copies. In 2014, Hook wrote on a majority of the songs on Trey Songz album Trigga which included #1hit single “Na Na”. During the same year, Sam and Chris Brown co-wrote the hit “Booty” by International megastar J.LO. In 2015, Sam went on to write Omarion’s #1 hit single “Post To Be”. Fast forward to 2018, Sam gained another hit with the “When We” remix by Tank ft. Trey Songz and Ty Dolla $ign. That same year, Ella Mai released her self-titled debut album, where Sam wrote “Naked” and “Whatchamacallit” ft. Chris Brown. Additionally, Sam has begun working on his own artist career, scoring features on Ne-Yo’s album, Good Man and T.I.’s 10th album DIME TRAP with the track “Seasons” in 2018.
Throughout Sam’s extensive career his bodies of work have gone on to be recognized by the industry’s leading music executives, artists, and music organizations. Most notably these acknowledgments include: 4 ASCAP Awards, Contributions to 4 Grammy-nominated albums, numerous RIAA Certified Platinum and Multiplatinum singles, albums and Billboard Rhythmic #1 singles. Today, Sam continues to follow the same foundation of entrepreneurship and hard work that he learned from his parents growing up. In 2015, Sam started label, The Family Business Enterprises LLC. In the year of 2018, the label took off releasing 12 EP’s, one for each month of the year, for the labels lead artist Mila J. These 12 works collectively contained 65 songs in total.
